Description

2021 Minimum Entry ATAR: 65

One of:

Successful completion of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or its equivalent, such as an interstate or international Year 12 qualification.  

Completion or partial completion of an approved tertiary qualification (including Certificates, Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas, Associate Degrees and Degrees).

Course prerequisites

VCE Units 3 and 4 – a minimum study score of 25 in any English (except EAL) or 30 in English as Alternate Language (EAL) or equivalent.

Other requirements

All enrolled students must maintain a current Working with Children Check (from the Appropriate State Authority) and a current Police Check throughout the duration of the course.

Evidence of a completed adult vaccination program is required before clinical placements are undertaken.

English Language Requirements 

You must demonstrate your English language competency in one of the following ways:

English is your primary language and you have attended and satisfactorily completed at least six (6) years of continuous education that is equivalent to secondary education taught and assessed in English in one of the recognised countries*, including at least two years between years 7 and 12.

IELTS (academic Module) with a minimum overall score of 7 and a minimum score of 7 in each of the four components

PTE (Academic) with a minimum overall score of 65 and a minimum score of 65 in each of the four communicative skills

TOEFL iBT with a minimum total score of 94 and a minimum score of 24 in listening, 24 in reading, 27 in writing and 23 in speaking

OET Nursing profession test and a minimum score of B (more than 350 marks) in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking) from a single test sitting. Results are to be valid for a maximum of two years from the test date.

* Recognised countries include Australia, United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa or the United States of America.

Special requirements

Immunisation

Students must provide an up to date record of all immunisations they have received over their lifetime, translated in English at the time of course commencement. For information on required vaccinations, please visit the Australian Government website.

At course commencement, the Faculty Immunisation form will require completion and signed by an Australian medical practitioner to ensure you are immunised according to the Vaccination for Healthcare Workers standards. Further information will be provided upon course commencement.

Additional immunisations may be required in response to any changes in Government policy or the specific requirements of the organisation you attend for your placements. Any required immunisations or serology tests would be at your own cost.

Police check

A Police check from your country of residence will be required at the time of course commencement.

Overseas

If you have lived overseas for more than 12 months in the past ten years, you are required to provide a police check from each country you resided in (including an English translation) and/or a statutory declaration stating that you have never been convicted of any crime in another country.

Australia

You will be required to have an annual National Police Record Check to attend placements. Further information about how to apply will be provided at course commencement.

Working with Children Check – all applicants must maintain a current Working with Children Check throughout the duration of the program.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR ALL INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ON NURSING AND MIDWIFERY BOARD OF AUSTRALIA (NMBA) ENGLISH LANGUAGE SKILLS REGISTRATION STANDARDS

Applicants must be able to demonstrate that they meet the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) English language skills registration standard. As part of this standard, applicants must be able to demonstrate that they have evidence of completing:

  • At least 5 years (full time equivalent) continuous education taught and assessed in English, in any of the recognised countries (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, United States of America, Canada, Republic of Ireland, United Kingdom).

OR

  • IELTS with a minimum IELTS (academic module) overall score of 7 and a minimum score of 7 in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking).

ANMAC additional English language proficiency requirements

In addition to meeting the Deakin English language requirement, it is an Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) accreditation requirement that applicants meet the English Language requirements of the ANMAC Accreditation Standards leading to initial registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) at commencement of their course. These requirements include a self- declaration that English is their primary language, evidence of achievement of the minimum English language test result as specified in the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia’s (NMBA) English language skills registration standard or hold current registration with APRHA as an Enrolled Nurse or Registered Nurse.

Primary language

NMBA requirement is that English is your primary language and you have attended and satisfactorily completed at least six years of primary and secondary education taught and assessed solely in English, including at least two years between years 7 and 12. English Language Proficiency Requirements

All applicants for the Bachelor of Nursing are required to provide evidence of demonstrating your English language competency in one of the following ways:

English is your primary language and you have attended and satisfactorily completed at least six years of primary and secondary education taught and assessed solely in English in a recognised country, including at least two years between years 7 and 12. Recognised country means one of the following countries: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States of America; or

Hold current AHPRA Registration as an Enrolled Nurse; or

If you do not satisfy any of the above, you will need to undertake an English language proficiency test and achieve the following scores:

An International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic) overall band score of at least 7.0 with a minimum 7.0 in each subset; or

An Occupational English Test with Grades A or B only in each of the four components; or

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBt – 94 or better overall and no score less than 24 for listening and reading, 27 for writing, and 23 for speaking; or

Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) – Requires an overall score of 65 with no sub-score less than 65.

English test results remain valid for no more than two years between final examination date and the date of commencement of study, and must appear on a single result certificate.

Working with Children Check – can take over 28 business days, you must apply at least 6 weeks prior to the mandatory check closing date.

Australian Federal Police Check – can take over 28 business days, you must apply at least 6 weeks prior to the mandatory check closing date.

Health Requirements

Work Integrated Learning (WIL) – Professional Experience Placement (PEP) – An activity that integrates academic learning with its application in the workplace. In nursing, it is referred to as placement or professional experience placement.

Attending professional experience placement is not automatic. To be eligible to attend clinical placement students must satisfy a list of requirements known as Pre-WIL Mandatory Conditions or Mandatory Checks.

The pre-clinical mandatory check submission deadline occurs up to three months prior to the commencement of each term that you are enrolled in. This date is to ensure that your mandatory checks are in order before you are deemed eligible to attend, and are allocated a professional experience placement the following term. You should allow sufficient time to familiarise yourself with what is required of you and the timelines involved.
